Two Roads

I painted a new picture yesterday:

Tutorial Perspective interior

Final Image:

In this tutorial I'll show you how I created this image.

If you wonder how to use some of the tools or where to find stuff, go to Photoshop Help (F1) and search for it.

Step 1: Setting up the perspective grid.

I like to get rid of the white canvas so I fill it with grey using the paint bucket (G).

Make a new layer.

Choose the line tool (U). In the top left you can change the settings for this tool. Set the weight low to make thin lines, about 3 pixels. Choose the mode in the middle: to draw paths. Because they're paths, you can see them outside the canvas which is nice when the vanishing point is outside the canvas. The lines you draw won't appear in the layers window but in "Paths" (Window > Paths). If you right click on this you can fill it with a color.

Deselect the paths by clicking beneath the path you just created. Now that we have the grid on a layer, we can head back to the "Layers" window. Eventually lower the opacity on the grid so that it won't be in the way.

Step 2: Sketching.

The sketching stage is probably the most important one. This is where you put down your idea and set the base for the entire drawing.

Make new layer. This layer is for sketching. Use the perspective grid to help you. If you're unfamiliar with drawing in perspective, don't worry. You'll notice if you make a mistake and it's easy to correct it. I sketched a hall. One-point perspective is great for halls and things like that. When done, you can make the perspective grid invisible.

Step 3: Cleaning up the sketch.

Create a new layer and, lower the opacity of the sketch layer. Draw over and clean up the sketch. When you're done you can make the sketch layer invisible so that you only have the clean lines.

Step 4: Blocking in value.

You can paint clean shadows by painting with 100% black on a separate layers. The layer opacity should be around 30%. I used multiple layers here.

Step 5: Correcting value.

Take a big round soft brush, set the brush opacity to around 30% (hotkey: 3). Paint until it looks good. Don't care about details, but focus on the picture as a whole. Correct the values as you see fit.

Step 6: Adding reflection.

Reflections are always nice. Copy you layers and flatten them. Flip the layer and move and scale it into place using the transform tool (Ctrl + T). Add a layer mask. With the layer mask selected, select all (Ctrl + A) and delete. Switch to the brush tool (B). Paint the reflection back in using a brush with low opacity. When satisfied, merge it with the layer beneath (so there are no holes) and use auto contrast (Shift + Ctrl + Alt + L). The contrast should be a little higher now.

Step 7: Texture.

Instead of painting the texture which is very time consuming, I go to www.cgtextures.com and grab a brick texture and a stained glass texture.

Copy the brick texture into Photoshop and change the blending mode to Overlay. Press Ctrl + T. Right click at the transform box and choose "Distort". Distort the texture into perspective. Use layer masks to make the texture fit. To texture the rest, copy the texture and repeat until you're done.

Import the stained glass texture into Photoshop. Fit it into the image by resizing, lowering saturation (Ctrl + U), and using levels (Ctrl + L)

Finally add some color by importing the brick texture and set the blending mode to "Color".

Step 8: Photo Filter.

Click on the black and white button at the bottom of the layers window. Choose photo filter. Use "Warming Filter (85)". Density 100%. Preserve Luminosity should be checked. Set blending mode to "Color" and Layer opacity to 75%.

Create another adjustment layer, this time "Brightness/Contrast. Contrast +50.

Step 9: Adding detail.

Add more color by using color layers and overlay layers. Add figures for scale and a monster to make it a bit more exciting.

I also chose to dim down the lines a bit. To do this, Ctrl-click on the line layer to select its content. Hide the selection (Ctrl + H) to see better. Use the Spot Healing Brush Tool (J) to blend the lines into the surroundings.

Step 10: Minor Touchups.

And that's it. I hope you have learned something from this tutorial. Have a nice day :)

OK, hi there! :)

I just joined this great community. I bought me a wacom intuos3 tablet about 2 weeks or so. Then I looked the net up for some help and tutorials. I found this great site about concept arts and so on...
I will practice everyday until I get a good artist in future some day. :)
But I draw with pencil, since I am a little child, too, very crazy stuff too, like maps from topview and castles etc. :) I think I am born to make it in the games industry, because I am good in art AND math too, and learned C++ and DirectX too very fast...
Someday, if allah wants it, I want to get into games industry. OK enough of this...

I got inspired from XIA's arctic mountain art and repainted it. Hope you like it and please rate it and criticize me etc...

Forest Concept Sketch

A conceptual sketch of an environmetal forest scene. I wanted to make the viewer's eye go directly to the center of the image (Focal Point). Also I added some water to give a cool sensation to the image.

Here is the final product:

On my blog you can see the video of it... so check it out!

Peace!

Spiderman - Traditional Way

Here are two drawings I did of Spiderman. These days I have been drawing more on paper then digital. I'm kind of more comfortable that way! I am still unsure if I will color them digitally...

(by the way on my blog I've posted some sketches I've been doing these days on paper) >check them out if you have time!<

1. Inked work:

2. Pencil Work (bit more rough strokes!) :

The second one took me one hour to make and reder Spiderman and another hour to design and render the background. It's cool to challenge yourself with time...

So what do you think of my traditional drawing skill?! Better or worse than digital?

All your opinions are welcome dear community! :D

Paladin

Hi all,

here is another drawing, Paladin in Judgment Armor
if any of you played WoW, you might remember it :)
I used a reference during sketching, because there is a lot of details. Did not bother with background =/

Any criticism will be highly appreciated! :)
As for now I can see that cloth part is not looking right because of missing wrinkles, I need to practice with it. Also, I couldn't make metal parts shiny/reflective enough, gotta work on that too...

Thanks,
Anton

This one was the first big project I made, it took me 30-40h,
I think I learnt a lot of things doing this. Also i used as a reference another painting.

My nephew
portrait
Had drawed this portrait of my nephew from a photo of him. It took me quite a long time to make it (around 20h) because I am just in the learning stage and I need to fight with my mouse all the time.

Dragon

Hi folks,

My name is Anton, I'm just another person inspired by Xia's tutorials :)
watched a lot of them, they are very helpful, thanks!
I was keeping an eye on this community as well, and I thought that people here might give me some good advices so that I can improve my drawing...
Here is my first post, a dragon drawing, feel free to criticize! ;)
PS: I'm pretty noob in painting, started learning like couple of months ago. But I guess I have a patience and desire to improve :)

Cheers,
Anton

My Unnamed Character

I am a little embarrassed about showing my character.Any idea or notion about his name?Something modern with a J.Is it too spiky ?

Irena Zaric

The character I illustrated is based on a book called Pretty Birds by Scott Simon. Her named is Irena Zaric. Set during the siege of Sarajevo, Irena and her family are brutalized and chased out of her home by Serb Para-military. In order for her to survive she steals from the dead to buy food, dodges bullets in her own home, risk her life to contact her best friend. Under the tutelage of rogues and heroes, Irena becomes a sniper.

According to the book, her uniform consist, from head to toe: Irena covers her head with a dark ski mask, paints her surrounding eyes with shoe polish to cover her exposed flesh. She wears a shemagh, Arab headdress (not mentioned in the book). I thought it would be a nice design element. Adorned in a mechanic's coverall as her basic uniform. Black gloves, again to hide most of her exposed flesh, except for her trigger finger, nail painted in purple (favorite color.). Wears a simple military belt, to carry extra ammo and food. Also fitted with Russian inspired combat boots. Irena's rifle of choice is the American made M-14, used during the Vietnam war, and still in use today. Chambers a 7.62mm round, kept nicely packed in a 20 round magazine. She also tapes up metal parts that can rattle and make noise, especial her rifle sling, in order to maintain noise discipline.

I painted her using a couple of software packages using Photoshop and Painter. And of course the illustration started off as a drawing. And then scanned to Photoshop.

New Years parties are over,

So I guess that by now most of us are sober again from the new years parties
although I might have some more coming up when I get back home from almost
3 months being abroad.

BUT that does not mean that we can leave this community that we have build up
over quite some time. Note that the first post was made on Thursday, February 21, 2008
which means that the 1 year IDG community celebration is also coming up quickly.
Not forgetting to mention the first posts of IDG it self in August 2007.
But thats more into Xia's hands rather than mine.

But for the celebration of the 1st year of the IDG community, lets hear some of
your idea's. See if we can make it something nice, to show our dedication to both
our own works and the effort made by Xia to bring us all together in the fist place.

So I hope I will see you all posting again this year, since a lot of you got much
better than when you first arrived here.

Best for the new year!
