I'm pretty pleased with the result of this one - I can;t believe the difference in studying value and using references...
Anyway, some how I feel without the back ground (first pic) it looks alot more realistic and has more depth...
But adding in a dark background ( and I must add this background in - I don't want an incomplete picture) - seems to make it look flat... and doesn't look as good....or is it just me? I'm very confused. Sorry for the sudden post.

Nice tonal work. I agree with you about the background. The first picture grabs your interest more.
I recommend you that dark background as it'll make more contrast and make the attention fall on his body since there will be a high change of contrast. Good job!
